How close were Jonathan and David?

And he said unto him, Fear not: for the hand of Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; and that also Saul my father knoweth. 1 Samuel‬ ‭23:17‬ ‭

This was Jonathan, the son of King Saul’s desire for David. David hadn’t become a king yet, but Jonathan could foresee his dear friend’s future, much ahead of time. The words of David were pleasing to Jonathan, both enjoyed each other’s company and they were great friends. The love between them was brotherly love called Philadelphos in Greek.

1. In the New Testament, David is a shadow of Lord Jesus and Jonathan a shadow of a child of God. As Jonathan’s soul was knit together with David [1Sam 18:1], because of the sweetness of his words, even so our soul is also knit together with Jesus — His Words are of life and sweet to our soul indeed.

2. Since Jonathan loved David as his own soul, he made a covenant with him [1 Samuel 18:3] Both were faithful to each other in their promises. Jesus and we have also made covenants with each other. But it’s mostly Jesus who has always kept His Word. Jonathan gave his best to David [1 Samuel 18:4]. In like manner we also should give our best to Jesus.

3. Jonathan delighted in David [1 Samuel 19:2]. We need to also delight in Christ. Life with Jesus is altogether sweet.

4. Jonathan spake good about David to his dad, Saul [1 Samuel 19:4]. Likewise, our praises should be of God. We should not allow any sort of self-boasting in our lives. Give praises to God in everything [Psalms 115:1].

5. Jonathan revealed his everything to David, because he was very close to David [1 Samuel 19:7]. There wasn’t a secret between them. Similarly, we shouldn’t hesitate to tell share our all with Jesus. There should never be a secret between Jesus and us.

The Lord has called us to be with Him. Our desire, in turn, should also be — to be with Him. He says - Therefore, behold, I will allure her, bring her into the wilderness and speak kindly to her. Hosea‬ ‭2:14‬.

May God help us.

Be blessed 💕
