Breaking News and the Believer’s Role

We are quick to respond to earthly news without understanding our role as Christians. So what does the Bible teach us about our response when there is breaking news?

Submit and Keep Your Words Holy

Everyone must submit to governing authorities (Romans 13:1). All authority comes from God and is placed by God.

Do not rebel against earthly authority (Romans 13:2). Your opinion is not required regarding what authorities have been assigned to do — whether you think they are doing it well or not.

Was there an attack at the border? Let the leaders discuss it and take appropriate action. Your views on such matters do not change the outcome.

Your views on what is going on in the church, however, do matter. You are heavenly citizens, and your role as believers is far greater than armchair activism.

Prayer Is the Solution, Not Your Feelings

Direct your outrage to prayer — not social media. We have our limits, and the Bible guides us on what God desires.

What does God desire we do concerning all earthly authority? (1 Timothy 2:1–4)

  1. Pray for all

  2. Ask God to help them

  3. Intercede on their behalf

  4. Give thanks

Social media is not a platform for voicing opinions on matters beyond our understanding. As Christians, we must avoid making divisive statements or taking sides.

What Else Does Scripture Direct Us to Do?

“Owe nothing to anyone — except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbour, you will fulfil the requirements of God’s law.” (Romans 13:8)

Submit to God. Pray for all. Be holy in your words. Love all.

The world does not need more opinions. It needs practising Christians — reflecting Christ in their daily walk.

Maranatha. Praise God. Amen.
