LOVE, KNOWLEDGE & DISCERNMENT — When Love Abounds, Wisdom Grows

When love abounds, knowledge and discernment grow (Philippians 1:9).

God's love is not a foolish love. It is full of wisdom and understanding. It abounds in knowledge and discernment.

God's love gives us the knowledge of God. Knowing God opens us up to a world we could never have imagined. We were once in darkness, until God shone His light into our hearts. We come to realize that our true citizenship belongs in heaven, and we pattern our lives according to Christ, eagerly awaiting His coming (Philippians 3:17–20).

Those who do not know God think only of temporary, earthly things — leading their lives toward destruction.

Why Do We Need Discernment?

We need discernment:

• To test every spirit, whether it is from God or not (1 John 4:1)

• To understand the ways of God (Psalm 119:125) — for understanding keeps us safe (Proverbs 2:11)

• To know the difference between right and wrong (Hebrews 5:14)

• Discernment is distinct from the spiritual gift of discerning of spirits. Discernment is a promise of God for all His children (Psalm 119:169).

Seek God in prayer for discernment. Study His Word to gain knowledge of who He is. Guard your life against ignorance and foolish ways. Desire more of His overflowing love. The end is near.
